Ike Isaacs began to play the jazz guitar at the age of fourteen teaching himself from some guitar instruction books. Although he came from a very musical family, Isaacs originally played the jazz guitar only as a hobby. He studied for a degree in chemistry at Rangoon University. In 1942 he graduated with a B.S., but due to the war was forced to move to India. There he was assigned to a government factory as a storekeeper. In order to enhance the low wages earned in the factory, Isaacs worked as a jazz musician in the evenings in local hotels. In 1946 he moved to the United Kingdom and settled in London having decided to make music and the jazz guitar his career. His first job was with the Ex-Bomber Command Band led by Leslie Douglas.
Ike Isaacs left Douglas in 1947 and joined a group playing at Hatchetts Restaurant in Piccadilly. He was also the featured jazz guitarist with the BBC Radio Show Band at that time and wrote his first acoustic guitar instruction books then. Ike Isaacs first achieved recognition for his jazz guitar work when he led the resident jazz guitar group on the popular BBC Radio programme. ‘Guitar Club’ . This programme was broadcast every Saturday evening from 1955 to 1958. For many years Isaacs was involved in studio work, although he did record with groups like the Ted Heath Band.
In 1975, Ike Isaacs was offered the chance to play with the Stephane Grappelli quartet.
